Self-Gaslighting: What is It & How to Deal with It?

Most of the time, we hear about being gaslighted by someone else. It is very uncomfortable and, no one would want to be in this situation. But it is barely said and, realized, that we could do it to ourselves.

The term “gaslighting” (used by psychologists) means a specific type of manipulation where the manipulator is trying to get someone else (or a group of people) to question their own reality, memory or perceptions.

Sounds awful! So, in that case, what means gaslighting yourself?

Self-gaslighting commonly involves suppressing and invalidating your thoughts and emotions.

For example, negative self-talk: "I am to blame for others problems", "I'm overreacting, it is not that bad!", "Others have worst problems than I", etc. Usually, self-gaslighting appears to those human beings who struggle with self-esteem, self-worth, self-confidence and similar things.

How to deal with this?

  • Be aware of having a problem with self-gaslighting and admit your action.

  • Switch negative self-talk affirmation into positive.

  • Journal your all emotions and thoughts, and certainly be open to it.

  • Be honest to yourself and seek the truth – don't just rely on your feelings and thoughts at the moment, but overthink afterwards by connecting with common sense.
