Burnout: How to Deal With It Positively?

We all used to have now and then burnout. It is not a pleasant feeling, especially when there is a lot to do and it seems that you will not get by if you do not continue now.

On that note, I will offer you some positive ways how to deal with it. But, before that, we need to understand what is burnout and if you are experiencing it right now.

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and often physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged or repeated stress.

Now, knowing the definition, we can try to find out if we have or had burnout. You can determine it by three aspects:

  • symptoms (tiredness, having trouble falling asleep, getting harder to wake up, achiness somewhere in the body, tend to overeat or undereat, relying on drugs/alcohol, way too many accidents, crying much more often etc.);

  • thoughts or feelings ("I have to do everything by myself", everything becomes meaningless, everything is the same, "what everyone wants from me?", "I am a failure"; "Where is the end of this all?" etc.);

  • stressors (not enough money, 'created' for a much better job, not enough time, family/marriage problems etc.).

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT POSITIVELY:
  • Create a schedule/invite a planner.

Allow a specific time of day for each activity from the to-do list. Between those activities, create a 15, 30, an hour-long break for doing something you enjoy.

  • Self-care activity every day.

After a long day, do something relaxing, enjoyable. For example, take a bath, watch a movie/tv series, bake something, knit, etc.

  • Journal.

That is one of the best activities to get rid of everything that has accumulated and is too much. If you don't know how to make it more unique, then check out this article.

  • Choose one day from the week as a free day.

Don't schedule anything on that day. This day is only for you and what you want to do. It will be a great reset for upcoming activities from the to-do list.

  • Have a morning/evening routine

By morning you can tell what kind of day you will have (most of the time). So, don't get right to the activities from the to-do list after waking up, but take your time preparing for those activities. If you need to improve your morning routine, take this quiz.

The same is with the evenings. That is time to prepare for going to bed. So, make sure to create some time after a long day and before going right away to bed.
